MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS |
SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: SECRET |
| 16 January 2008 |
| Dear Secretary Adams, I am reaching out because the Australian Government would like further clarification on the status of three Pacific Island nations: the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. When the United States granted independence to these former United Nations trust territories in 1986 and 1994 they signed a Compact of Free Association with the United States. Are these states still under free association with the United States and are the Compact agreements still in force? Yours sincerely, Kevin Rudd. |
