AUTHENTIC COMMUNIQUE OF THE OFFICE OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS Security Clearance: Secure and Encrypted ŞİFRELEME KORUMASI: KAPLUĞA |
| [Recipient]: Mr. Ilias Zografos Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs < JamieA >[Sender]: Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of Foreign Affairs, Türkiye < ATÜnlü@db.tr.gov > [Subject]: Confidential // Normalization of Relations |
| Your Excellency, I hope this letter finds you well. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, I wish to convey our sincere regards and our continued respect for the longstanding ties between our two nations and peoples. Over the decades, the relationship between Türkiye and Greece has experienced both periods of cooperation and moments of tension. While successive governments on both sides have undertaken efforts to advance dialogue and reconciliation, many of these initiatives have unfortunately not resulted in the lasting normalization of relations that both our countries would benefit from. Nevertheless, Türkiye firmly believes that constructive engagement remains not only possible but necessary. In this spirit, I would like to propose an opportunity for renewed diplomatic dialogue between our ministries. Direct and candid discussions at the senior level could allow us to explore practical avenues for strengthening communication, rebuilding confidence, and addressing areas of concern in a manner that promotes stability and mutual understanding. To that end, I would be pleased to meet with you personally to discuss ways in which our governments might advance a more durable and constructive relationship. Should it be agreeable to you, Türkiye would be honored to host such a meeting in the city of Izmir, whose history and proximity reflect the deep connections between our two societies. Alternatively, I would be equally willing to travel to Athens in order to meet with you at a time and venue convenient for your government. As two nations in Europe and the Mediterranean, both proud nations with rich pasts can chart a course toward peace, grounded in dignity and self-respect. It will not be easy, but it will be right. Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration. I look forward to the possibility of meeting with you and working together toward a more stable and constructive relationship between our two countries. Respectfully, Ayda Ünlü Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Political Affairs Türkiye |
