Project Name: Power Shield UK: National Energy Resilience Program
Budget: $20bn
Objective: Deploy a rapid-response, nationwide network of modular microgrids to strengthen the UK’s energy resilience, reduce outage risks, and support renewable integration.
1. Strategic Goals
- Energy Resilience: Ensure uninterrupted power to critical infrastructure (hospitals, water treatment plants, emergency services) during grid failures.
- Regional Equity: Deliver energy support to rural and underserved communities.
- Emergency Preparedness: Establish a permanent, flexible backup power system ahead of extreme weather, cyberattacks, or geopolitical disruptions.
2. Project Scope
- Technology
- 40ft containerised modular microgrids, each with;
- Solar PV arrays (expandable on-site),
- Battery Energy Storage System,
- Smart interverters & control systems.
- Plug-and-play grid connection hardware.
- 40ft containerised modular microgrids, each with;
- Scale
- Approx. 3,000-4,000 units nationwide, strategically positioned for regional coverage.
3. Timeline
- Week 0
- Launch project, announce public/private manufacturing contracts,
- Mobilise logistics partners (e.g., Network Rail freight, private hauliers),
- Pre-identify Tier 1 priority sites (NHS hospitals, water facilities, military bases).
- Week 1-2
- Transport and install units at Tier 1 sites (approx. 1,500 units),
- Simultaneously begin Tier 2 installations (local government offices, telecom hubs, food distribution centres).
- Week 2-3.5
- Complete Tier 2 installations (approx. 1,500–2,500 units),
- Commission systems, conduct load testing,
- Establish national monitoring centre for remote performance tracking.
4. Budget
Category | Allocation (Bn) | Notes |
Manufacturing of microgrids | 12 | Bulk order of modular units with renewables + storage |
Logistics & Deployment | 3.5 | Transport, cranes, site preparation |
Grid Integration & Testing | 2 | Local coordination, connection fees |
Monitoring & Control Infrastructure | 1 | National control centre, software systems |
Contingency & Risk Reserve | 1.5 | Spare units, unforeseen costs |
5. Outcome
- All priority Tier 1 sites operational with microgrids within 3.5 weeks,
- Reduction in critical infrastructure outage time to near-zero in first year,
- 20–25% renewable contribution from deployed microgrids,
- Demonstrated capability to redeploy units during emergencies within 48 hours.
