PROJECTEnergy Production Modernization and Upgrade
PROJECT COST1,000,000,000.00
COMPLETION DATE07/12/2023
PROJECT INFORMATIONAs a result of the lack of fossil fuels and other traditional power production resources on the Japanese islands, the country has since the dawn of the modern era been dependent on foreign imports. In the latter part of the 20th century, nuclear power already saw increased use but the percentage was still small compared to coal, gas and oil. With climate change and a renewed insistence on energy independence, the government has authorized the Energy Production Modernization and Upgrade program. Under this program all Generation II reactors are to be upgraded to Generation III. Additionally thirty more nuclear power facilities will be constructed. These facilities are placed away from population centres and with the highest levels of safeguards against natural disasters. Each facility will have 8 nuclear reactors of the third generation Advanced Boiling Water Reactors by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Toshiba. Each reactor produces 1.3 GW of power, at 8 reactors per facility and 30 facilities these new reactor produce 312 GW of power. The upgrades will furthermore add another 50 GW of energy production to the existing facilities.

In addition to the upgrade and expansion of the nuclear power production, the government has also commenced programs to construct 100 solar farms spread throughout the country. Each of these farms can produce 2.25GW of power. The total energy production from the solar farms as such is 225 GW The government will also construct twenty wind farms on the Sea of Japan within Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone and at the windiest areas within this zone. On average these wind farms can produce 1.2 GW for a total of 24GW of energy production.

The total increase in nuclear and renewable energy production from this program is 312+50+225+24= 611 GW
