Meeting Place
Government House, Nicosia, Cyprus
President of Cyprus
Her Excellency Alexandra Kyriakou
since April 2009

Early Life
Alexandra Kyriakou was born in Paphos in 1993, the eldest of three children in a military family. Both parents served in different branches of the Cypriot forces and raised their children with a strong sense of duty, discipline, education and awareness of the wider world. Growing up surrounded by Paphos's archaeological heritage gave Alexandra an early fascination with Cyprus's history and cultural inheritance.

Education
Alexandra studied Archaeology in Cyprus before completing a Master's degree in Greece. She later spent time in Turkey developing her Turkish-language ability while continuing her archaeological interests. The experience broadened her understanding of Cyprus's history and strengthened her belief that the country's heritage belongs to all Cypriots and must be understood through more than one community's perspective.

Road into Politics
Alexandra did not initially intend to become a national politician. Her political life began through student social movements, where she campaigned for better education and stronger protection of Cyprus's archaeological heritage. Her frustration grew as she saw educated young people struggle to find meaningful careers, cultural sites receive inadequate protection, and schools repeatedly fail to give students a strong understanding of history, politics and the wider world.

Crisis of Confidence
Alexandra became increasingly critical of a government she believed was asking citizens for loyalty while failing to give them sufficient reasons to trust the state. Economic mismanagement, rising debt and a growing dependence on outside funding convinced her that Cyprus needed a government capable of producing sustainable prosperity rather than simply spending beyond its means.

Political Philosophy
Alexandra developed a centrist, socially progressive political outlook focused on improving everyday life. Her priorities became education, opportunity, child protection, sustainable economic growth, cultural heritage, public services and a shared sense of Cypriot civic pride. She believes Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians, Latins and other Cypriots should be able to retain their distinct identities while feeling that the state belongs equally to all of them.

Becoming President
Alexandra's political movement eventually developed into a national reform coalition. Her combination of centrist economics, social investment, heritage protection, civic nationalism and institutional reform attracted voters who wanted a government that felt competent, modern and distinctly Cypriot. She was elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, entering office with a mandate to rebuild public trust and make the state more capable.

The Presidency
Alexandra's administration adopts the programme "A Capable Cyprus". Her government is built around the idea that the state should educate its citizens, protect those who need it, preserve the country's heritage, create sustainable prosperity and give citizens meaningful opportunities to contribute to national life.
